Unhappy Migrating Access 97 to SQL Server

I recently linked my access 97 tables to SQL Server using DTS. I am still using Access 97 as the front-end.

Problem: When users access the tables in raw grid form and change things the whole app and tables lock or the app just timesout.

Question: Is there a way to migrate from Access to SQL and have SQL administer the transactions? I heard that upgrading to Access 2000 resolves this issue. Any thoughts?
