Database Deisgn for MES/Industrial Automation

My company is in the early design stages of a medium MES application. We are looking for a guide of some sort to help explain to our customer how important database design is before we log any data to the database.

Has anyone seen or used a document that may aid us in this critical step? any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks,

David Wylde
