Is there a way to make a sound file smaller?

I know that graphics such as gif, bmp, and jpg are different sized files. I've opened up files in paint and saved as a smaller file before to use up less disk space. Is there a way to do that with sound files?

I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks bunches!

yes resample at a lower rate, consider sampling as mono.
You may be able to restrict the file size further by carefull choice of the file type - some storgae formats are leaner than others.

In effect its is exactly like storing an image, you can adjust the file type (blocky graphics work well in GIF & PNG, photos work well in JPEG & PNG), you cab adjust the qulatiy threshild in the JPEG & PNG to contorl how images are samepled & stored). And exactly like adjustign the quality, adjusting the sampling down bins information from the file, nor does adjusting up recreate more information.

Thanks for the info!

We are really low tech at our house. I was hoping that there was something that could be done with the windows media player. I just wanted to add a sound file to my MSN Space. I found a smaller file to use just a little while ago.

Thank you very much for your advice!
