Host Virtualization

Hi folks,

Although slightly off topic, I wonder if anyone has experience with virtualization.
Take this new Hypervisor technology for example. Both VMWare and Microsoft offer their own versions and I was thinking of trying it out.

I am concerned about performance though.
Does anyone know the difference if you are running two systems on one machine, as compared to only one ("non-virtual") system before?
If for example I want to have a normal home desktop, i.e. Windows XP/Vista,
but for testing purposes also a Linux, or maybe Windows 2008 installation next to that... both virtually controlled by the hypervisor layer.

Will I actually have halved my system resources between both?
Does anyone know any site that has a good comparison for this kind of easy scenario?

Because I would like to use my normal home PC for that experiment...
