Someone in my office has been using the old Leading Edge Nutshell DOS application on a 95 box. In my attempts to modernize her work/routines, I'm attempting to convert the database to a newer format so that I can give her an XP workstation, but I have unsuccessful in accessing the data in anything except the old Nutshell software.

From what I've read, the current Filemaker Pro is somewhat descended from the old Nutshell software. I tried opening, converting, and repairing from within Filemaker ... to no avail. The Nutshell .DB files appear to be flat database files. I can open them in UltraEdit, but it would take months to clean up the data by hand (assuming that I can 'see' all of it).

I had run across a discussion here dating back about a year or so, talking about Nutshell and Filemaker so I thought maybe there might be someone still around who has run across this software before and/or maybe even had luck converting it to another format.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

We actually developed our old dos based bookkeeping system in Nutshell, and finally ported it over to an Access system. Because Nutshell is a proprietary flat-file binary database system, it cannot be read by other programs that access common data formats. There is fortunately an export function in Nutshell that will put the data out in ASCII comma delimited format, which can be picked up by Excel and Access. The challenge is to create a form in Nutshell that contains ALL of the data you need to keep, export it, then pick it up in another program using the known export order.
:sigh: I have good memories of the elegant Nutshell program, and I've hoped many times that someone would turn it into a useable relational database...
