Equivalent to "top" in ASE

Hey ,

I'm kinda new to Sybase. I was trying to port some queries over to syabse, ASE 11.9 on a linux box. I guess "top" is not supported in ASE and the only other alternative is found so far was using the rowcount.

Background : A table containing MAT_CODE and an associated MAT_DATE
What i need to do is retrive the 10 most recent time stamped mat_code.

What worked for me was

Set rowcount 10
select Mat_code from table order by mat_date desc
Set rowcount 0

Earlier on I could use : select top 10 mat_code from table order by mat_desc

I would like to avoid using rowcount cause it couldnt get it to work thru VB using ODBC Anyone got any suggestions.
