Need help in database defination

Hi guys, i have a few newbie question to ask. If you don't mind, i hope you can help me out as try searching the web but is unable to find any answer.

1) What are data archives?

2) What purpose do they serve?

3) What is the relationship between a database and its data archives?

1) a place to put old data

2) they keep your old data for you

3) historical

I think the answer to # 3 is "civil at best". Otherwise, you would not need to separate them.
