Unicode database in informix

hi all,
i have created a unicode databse in informix. i have set the client and DB locale to UTF 8. I want to know how can i pass wide char (2byte unicode) data to the library funcation.
The funcations like sqli_connect_open() take arguments as char pointers. How can i pass wide char data to these functions.
