Cant format my Excel doc

I have received a xls from my friend,
icant format (bold or italize)by clicking the icon on tool bar or using the short cut

but if i change the font to same font using dropdown in tool bar it works

what may be the problem
can any one help?

Is the workbook or the cell protected? Is the file 'read-only'? These are the first things that come to mind? Is the toobar 'greyed' out?
