I have purchased 2 text editor utilities (editpadpro and ultraedit) both of which are pretty good products, however even after spending money on those I have found myself using crimson editor which is free. Without having to add extensions or making any modifications its syntax highlighting is really good and you can't beat the price. I'm not sure if the product is being actively developed still, but in its current form it works fine and I haven't had any problems.

Another "light" editor you might want to check out is WinSyntax availible at www.winsyntax.com
