Unhappy coldfusion uddate

Hi
I am trying to update a table In Oracle using ColdFusion. If the records does not exist, I intend to insert into the table.
Unfortunately the <cfcatch type= "Database"> is not trapping the error. I believe that it treats not as an exception.

Any comments on how to solve this. I am aware that i can do a select first to determine if the records exists but i am trying to minimize the parse to the db.

Thanking you in advance.
