Maintaining state after update

how do i maintain the state of radiobuttons and checkboxes, etc. after "post"ing?

is this where a dictionary object could come in handy?

i would try to pull off a javascript window.history.back(); on the output page. I did this with a email form when the data submitted did not pass validation. All form data intact.
