MAJOR COMPUTER CHANGES COMING SOON!

I was considering upgrading my home system or building a couple new systems to create a network with for my house, and while looking at mainboards I saw a new slot(PCI-X 64bit or PCI EXPRESS). I researched it found I must of been asleep for to many weeks, that's all it takes these days to lose grip on computer advancements. From the new slot I learned AGP slots will soon be history, and Microsoft is bring a new O'S out.

Next Generation will be rolling out soon, so stop upgrading your computers, your wasting your money. Microsoft is coming out with a new O/S called Longhorn in 2005. AGP video cards will most likely become obsolete, among other things. While PCI Express means X16 next generation graphics delivering 4GBs per second per direction, that may mean that when Nvidia releases its PCI Express card, you'll have to buy a whole new PC to plug it into. more here

AGP vs PCI-X

That PCI-X was coming was known for a long while now. I heard of it 1.5 year ago. Didnt of the release till a couple of months ago though.


While PCI Express is a lot faster then AGP.PCI-X is full duplex while AGP isn't and has 16x.

Graphic cards won't use it full potential as of yet, maybe it will for the high end graphics cards like quadro's or wildcats.

The graphic cards don't even use the AGP 8x to it's fullest yet. So i don't think AGP will be gone for a while.


For the NVidia and ATI Graphic cards:

NVidia is developing a card with a bridged PCI-X video card which means its not better then AGP 8x. ATI said they where developing a native PCI-X support, but there are some rumors this is still a bridged version too.

Longhorn has been announced for awhile now

I am always skeptical about upgrading my computers because I know once I buy the new parts and upgrade them, new parts will come out in the next week and I will be behind again, besides the prices will drop on the products that I just bought.

This seems to be worth waiting for though

Longhorn is a while away yet.

I must admit this PCI-X does look good. There just isn't any hardware to utilise the speed yet. Also intel are going 64bit for sometime yet so I think id still go for an AMD for now and have the faster software running rather than the faster hardware.
