You should just get out and mingle....say hi to people...find out what interests you have in common...

I'm horrible at small talk

I have always been horrible at small talk also. Say hi, that's easy. How are you, again..easy. Now what? After that, if I don't have an actual purpose (that doesn't feel too akward), i'm lost for words.
