Extranets - Best way to set them up

Currently at my job we have multiple applications and servers that act as a type of Extranet. The problem I see is that we spend lots of money on security and not all of these servers use the same type of security.

What I want to do is setup a 'True' Extranet. This requires us to setup a portal that all our business partners, clients or outside users can log into using one security. Once logged in (depending on their security) they will be allowed access to only the areas they need to see.

Can this type of infrastructure be setup? Has anyone setup a corporate Extranet and if so what are your feelings about them?

Thanks

J. W.
