Modem troubles

i built me a computer from scratch, and I'm not a big fan of windows98 se or windows 2000. so i ordered a Linux operating system from novel, Ubuntu. on the website they promised that the operating system would recognize any hardware. well i have the software for the modem and its compatible with Linux. but first of all it didn't recognize the modem, secondly the software wouldn't install. i''m at a loss. i don't want to go out and buy a new modem.

the modem is an agere pci soft modem.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Terrell.
