I find that behavior noxious at face value, but there could be a good reason for it so I wouldn't pitch a fit.
One thing that I would do if I were you is to tell them up front that the reason you're willing to buy a LiveBox is to connect your gaming console even though you already have your PC working. I'd ask the salesperson point blank if you can return the LiveBox if it does not help get your console connected. They may say no (they might not even have the authority to say yes), but I'd ask them the question anyway.

actually it doens't matter if they say yu cna or cannot return the device, or if they do or do not have authority. anything bought in the EU from an EU supplier that is not bought in person is covered by the distance selling legislation. whether that law is implented in other counttries I don't know, but it is in the UK.
that means that any purchase completed over over the phone, fax, email, internet, or any process other than face to face is covered by DSL... you as a consumer can return the goods for a full cash refund of the purchase price, postage excepted.
As I understand it there should be no need to buy a livebox..... if your exisitng router is connecting to orange internet, then 'all' you need to do is to get the XBOX to connect ot the router.. but I don't know how to config an XBOX.... it needs an IP address, a DNS server and a gateway..... I'd guess the XBOX OS is going to be based on a windows variant codebase.
so id try to set the ip address to a DHCP client set auto. Id set the gateway to the router IP address AND the gateway to the router and see if that works.. or Id look at the settings on the PC an replicate those, obviously dont use the same ip address as the PC!
tht should connect to the router.
you may need to opne the relevent ports on the firewall (if any) on the router for XBOX games.. and that would depend what ports are use for the XBOX live service AND how you set that on the router.. Normally Id put the IP address of the router in your pc's internet browser
