Uhmm....since Capital Gains taxes are incurred when the stock is sold, wouldn't lowering the tax have the OPPOSITE effect, and encourage people to dump their holdings?
Of course, this is the sort of economic solution I would expect from conservatives...

Is that your way of saying that it doesn't vary too much?

As the baby boomers retire or can not work anymore, the later scenario I feel my father is slipping into, all of these problems will be exacerbated.
what the arse clowns will not tell you is that we are going to have to both CUT SPENDING and RAISE taxes if we are ever going to solve the long term financial problems that will continue to sink the country into a bigger and bigger hole.
Stimulating the economy by cutting taxes or cutting everyone a check or continuing to PRINT MONEY as we have in the last couple of months is the rudest farse that plays to mans lowest self interested instincts.
The whole country has been living ghetto-fabulous for too long. Time to pay the bill.

You just hit the nail on the head, Sean.
But you're right - no politician in their right mind will ever admit it.

cutting expenditure is always hard for a politician to do, because although no one likes paying taxes (everyone thinks their tax burden is way too high), virtually everyone still demands 'their' services from government. the problem as ever is that politicians represent people, they are dependant on the the peopel voting for them at relatively short intervals. so there is precious little time for people to get over the upset of change before any benefits (assuming there are some) become evident. Politicians in so many ways are like actors, they crave the limelight, they crave the attention, they don't live in what any and everyone else regards the real world. but unlike actors their decisions can have serious long term consequences, as the UK in particular is going to find out (yet again) over the next few years

Ugh. Another Wednesday.
At least I have a job, but damn am I tired.
It's too bad that making soap, knitting and ceramics isn't more profitable. Though in the last year I've made about $2000 from those things, it's not enough to support the family.
Is it too much to ask to find someone rich AND tolerable so that I don't have to work anymore?

I want to step OOTO for a couple and beat a retreat to the bed, but I did that once 2 weeks ago.

You're probably advertising on the wrong forum - either attribute by itself is difficult enough to find here but both together is damn near impossible
