It's like you don't even know me

I like sports - skateboarding, surfing, biking, football, etc...
I'd love to see american football, baseball and/or basketball if I end up over there!

Equally I'm happy just playing uber tourist for a few.

Undecided but that's kind of the point of the question - open to suggestions. I'm quite tempted by Woodward Camp, but no idea where that is

Personally I'd head to the west coast and perhaps land in San Fran and then if you don't mind driving :
  • over the Golden Gate
  • to the Sierra Nevada mountains
  • Lake Tahoe
  • Death Valley
  • Las Vegas
  • Grand Canyon
  • Canyon De Chelly
  • Meteor Crater
  • The Aeroplane Graveyard
  • Big Sur
That's a lot of memories to keep.

Sounds good Mike, but that'd really have to be a whistle-stop at each destination, right?

They were just ideas - you don't have to do all (or any) of them. Some bits take 10 minutes (the golden gate). Some places are just places to drive to or through. Other places you can just sit down and look at until your eyes get tired (ie Grand Canyon or Monument Valley). I'd recommend looking at a map and researching places on the web - give each idea a score out of 10 and then try and link up all the best places into an interesting trip. Just realised I forgot to add Monument Valley - that's a must see. The Pacific coast drive by Big Sur is a nice way to finish as well. You could see if your bosses might give you some extra time off (unpaid) - in this climate they might jump at the chance.

Capt'n, I'm in the middle of the bread basket of America, right smack between Chicago and Milwaukee. You are more than welcome to visit, we have a lot of cultural activities, museums and the like. I'd love to have you here.

But yes, my trip to the conference has been cancelled and I'm a sad panda.

Maybe I can teleconference?

Did I say something wrong?

You'd be welcome too, Pootsie.

Mike's trip ideas are great .. I would change part of it though. After visiting San Francisco I would head north to the Redwoods (one of nature's greatest) then I would drive south on the Pacific Coast Highway (arguably the most beautiful coast ride in the country) all the way to Santa Monica and stop by several beautiful areas on the way. Then I would make a quick stop at Hollywood Blvd just to brag about it later to your friends and say that you were not impressed (not kidding) .. then head east to Vegas and the Grand Canyon .. voila! .. of course there are tons of beautiful places to visit if you decide to land on the right coast instead ..

Well, we just got hit up by the lay-off fairy. Looks like a 10% drop this time, with an option to drop an undisclosed number in October. Sadly, they refuse to give me the package. The silver lining is that two of the thorns in my side have been shown the door, though. I guess you really can't have it all.....unless you have a winning lottery ticket ;-)

I agree the coast road is stunning. I had one of my very stupid bike accidents along that road. I was riding along while staring out at the Pacific ocean - it's quite hypnotic watching the waves come crashing in - you feel like you've come to the edge of the world. Suddenly the road noise (from the tyres) just stopped and I realised I'd gone off the side of the road and was flying through the air down to the beach. Had a lucky landing onto a slope and just managed to stay right side up. It was a difficult push back up to the road though.
