I remain to be convinced looking around at the countries that are armed, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Moss Side, Toxteth & Brixton

Expand, please. Any story including the words "my new best friend with the machine gun" begs for further details.

I think anyone within 50 metres with a machine gun is your new lifelong, anything-you-say bosom buddy.

the way i heard the story unfold, the professor was a huge prick and had only himself to blame for getting arrested after verbally abusing the cop
conan o'brien reported that obama had invited bofadem over to the white house for a couple beers, which might not be a good move... as the last time obama had beer at the white house, he ended up buying general motors

So are you saying the issue isn't just black and white?

no, i'm not saying that (although that's a decent conclusion)
what i said was that what i heard (on television; obviously not in person) was that the good professor chased after the cop, verbally abusing him despite being asked to desist, to the point where the cop felt it necessary to arrest him for "loud and tumultuous behavior in a public place"
FYI you might want to read to police report: Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Police Report - July 23, 2009

It's a bit of a long story but here goes: Camping for the night in a forest in Washington State (normally a very peaceful place). I thought I had the whole place to myself and was relaxing with a beer. At around midnight a whole load of screams come out of the centre of the forest. I put on my jeans and flip flops and went to investigate. Turns out a bunch of drugged out youths had set fire to a clearing with petrol. I crept a little closer to the clearing just to check there wasn't anyone in trouble. As I moved forward a bloke stepped out from behind a tree - picture the bearded hill billy in the film Deliverance, the other thing I noticed about him was he was carrying an ancient looking machine gun. He asked if I was going in to quieten them down - I thought it might be better if I step in rather than letting the mad man with the machine gun go in so in I went. Big mistake - one pulled a knife and another was walking round behind me with the intention of taking me out from behind. Sadly I couldn't turn because the lad with the knife was wafting it around in front of my face. My Wednesday night had started to take a down turn! The lad with the knife suddenly backed away and I turned to see Rambo had stepped out of the bushes and was standing on the now unconscious lad who had been carrying a tyre iron. Then he just put the gun at waist height and started shooting. I had no idea if he hit anyone, I was too surprised. There were people running everywhere in the clearing and every time a bullet hit the trees you'd get flaming bark flying through the air. I didn't know whether to run screaming through the bushes too but being English you feel you have to at least pretend to be calm. It was soon just me and him in the clearing and he walked over to me. I still wasn't sure what was going to happen at this point - but calm as a cucumber he just said "an armed society is a polite society".
Oddly enough 2 weeks later I was passing back through the area with my future wife who I'd picked up in Seattle. I stopped at the same place because it really was a beautiful spot and I figured everyone would of moved on by now. I obviously didn't tell her about what had happened last time. I put up the tent and went to collect firewood for a fire. When I came back Rambo was sitting next to her what an entertaining evening I'd had last time. She wasn't very happy.

Hell, that happens all the time over here in the States.
I thought your story was going to be something interesting and unusual.

Oh dear - am I the only person on here with a face now? At least it sort of proves I'm not a bot.
The ski-pants I borrowed from a friend 20 years ago. He was going to throw them out as he'd put a few tears in them. I'm so tight I just sewed up the tears and wore them for the next 18 years!
A ski chalet varies wildly in price depending on resort, location within the resort, number of people, what week and whether you want a cook. It's obviously best to avoid school holidays. If you're flexible then late season is a great time to go - lots of snow and sunny weather. I'm really only familiar with Chamonix as that's where I go but surely America has great ski resorts and wouldn't that be cheaper? I'd be happy to offer you my place but it's always fully booked by the agent so even I now have to book ahead
