Simple Web Page question

I'm working on the wife's website, and I'm trying to decide how to do the shopping cart.
There's plenty of 3rd party stuff out there - from free to $100+ per month. Or, I can use the "Add to Cart" and "Buy it Now" buttons that are part of PayPal.

My question is - what's the benefit of using 3rd party, when it appears to be pretty simple to just add the PayPaly buttons to my site?

The benefits are control over look and feel, as well as the nitty gritty details behind when and how transactions are processed.

None of that stuff matters for the average very small business.

Hey RedNeck,

Got a link?

In my limited ecommerce experience I set up a site for a friend using wordpress (installation on a host server, not the website), then found a widget that took care of the the marketplace and basket. In the widget I had to set up how I wanted the transactions to be completed, i.e. paypal, google checkout. I think it was called WP e-commerce.

Hope that helps but not sure. I would definitely be interested in seeing what you decided to do.

Does Paypal require a secure server (https)?

I believe so, not 100% sure. I did not do the final setup I left that to my friend to enter their information. Might have just been a link to paypals website and they check out through paypal.

With PayPal payments, the user will be put over to the PayPal website, which is already protected by SSL. You don't really need your own https unless your storing sensitive users data.

My wife has a website and we use the Buy Now PayPal button. We are very happy with it. I just do not see any need to use anything else.

Buy Now PayPal Buttons is the best... it is an effective medium to sell individual items from your website. it is easy to implement, no up-front costs, sell with ease and improve buyer experience. with so much benefits why look for an alternative? with customizable buttons and secure payments, happy customers become repeat customers.

Going 3rd party gives you full control and an integrated cart, but then you have to deal with PCI compliance.

Paypal buttons get you around PCI compliance, but leave your site(non-integrated cart)

Hi,
I used to use 3rd parties until I recently decided on the diy paypal button following a friend's recommendation. So far (3-4 months) no probs!
