DB2 for z/OS. Why? Because very few young people know it. If you don't like DB2 for some reason, then go for IMS.

Frankly I would go find something that will give your life some meaning and purpose while you are young and unattached and save these pragmatic life goals for a time when they are neccessary. I always ask candidates what their life (not career goals) are and I get so forlorned everytime they reply "CIO" or "Principal Architect" or I had one tell me they want to be me once. I drank heavy that night.

if any interviewer ever asked me what my life goals were, i would look him straight in the eye and say "to live pain-free until the day of my death" and let him worry about whether that meant physical pain or the mental anguish of dealing with assholes who like to jerk people around in interviews
no offence to you personally, sean

None taken. I would be perfectly fine with that response. I just want young people to tell me that they have big dreams, but they never do. I do not hold it against them. I just want to find someone who is not there.

Life goals:
1) Crush enemies.
2) See them driven before you.
3) Hear the lamentation of their women.
oh, and win the lottery, so I don't have to actually work anymore.

Winning the lottery just changes the work that you do... Instead of working to earn money so you can live, you live to beat down the beggars, newly found relatives, and tax collectors so you can keep the money that you won. I'm not at all sure that it would be a good trade, but I'll wait to decide my preference until I've tried both sides.

My first CIO used to make me do this at the begining of meetings in full Arnold voice. Especially outside the department ones. He would turn to me and ask "So Sean, what is good in life?"

As for the lottery, I have that all worked out. How to claim the ticket, setup the trust funds for the truly loved ones and how to dip out for locations unknown and not to be heard from again.

I had to paraphrase for our non-Austrian listeners, as well as to fit the topic at hand ;-).

In my database class we learned SQL and used Oracle, primarily working in SQL Plus and just wrote the SQL statements to create tables, run queries etc.

If you have access to proprietary technology - use it. But: Whatever you finally choose to focus on, study more than developmental aspects. For example, are you familiar with entity-relationship modelling?
What do you study?
