Foreign languages

Did you ever study a foreign language for the sole purpose of accessing information (apart from occupational requirements)?

For instance: Someone studies Japanese in order to get an insight into PostgreSQL's progress in the local market.

Which languages do you consider to be relevant to access certain sources?

I would consider Spanish, simply because it's easy to learn and the Spanish speaking world is expanding by leaps and bounds

studying written Japanese = suicide

their Kanji has like 30+ thousand characters, even native Japanese speakers don't recognize certain characters in News papers (i'm serious)
