idx file problems

Hi all, i have a problem on a cobol batch application on a AIX server. It is an application that reads a sequential file and writes an idx file. When the dimension of input file becames big, the program gets an error (21 code of file-status) in writing the idx file. I have checked obviously all the physical AIX parameters (e.g. space on file systems used, etc) but from AIX point of view is all o.k. Also, it seems to be o.k. from cobol programming point of view.
Do you know about some limit dimension exception on idx files?
Thanks
