HTTP Error 500

In laymans terms I want to understand whats going on when I get
HTTP 500 "The page cannot be displayed."
As far as i know this website is up and running-at least thats what the administrator told me.I don't understand the possible problems such as
a "scripting problem" or "failed database attempt".Is it possibly my
settings that could be wrong?I have Windows 98 Internet Explorer.
This website I have been able to get before until yesterday or the day before.Please help!Laymans terms please.
