FreeStanding DB driven app HELP

I've got a very simple 2 table db that is currently in MS ACCESS 2000. I want to somehow rebuild it in a language that doesn't have royalties attached to it, (like access does). I don't even know where to start. The ideal end result would be the exact same functionality w/o paying Bill Gates. Please help.
