Exclamation Data Mining

Do you anyone here know about Data mining?
it is a new field in database technology.
so far, i only know that it is used to find out the trends from the data.then, it will be turned into useful information.
so, could anyone explain smore to me?

Data Mining involves searching through data at varying levels of granularity across one or more dimensions of a data base primarily to analyze variants.

Data Mining is one component of Online Analytical Processing.
