Class Offerings Analysis
The mission of the UCF Division of Graduate Studies is to provide leadership and services to create high-quality learning environments
for graduate students. In support of this mission, the Division of Graduate Studies is client-centered and focused on providing the
information and services that students need to enhance their experience with UCF and that faculty and staff need to effectively carry
out their responsibilities to students. In an effort to continually improve the student experience, the division of Graduate Studies often
conducts focus groups and other means by which to collect feedback from students regarding areas for improvement. Recently, there
have been complaints heard in these focus groups of graduate students unable to register for required classes. The administration
would like to be responsive to this growing concern; however, an action plan needs to be put into place to investigate if this antidotal
evidence has any foundation. If it is an issue, the magnitude of the problem needs to be clarified along with the root causes.
It has been suggested that additional focus groups and surveys of graduate students be conducted to collect more detailed information
regarding the specifics of this issue. One administrator believes that the issue is due to departments not offering courses with enough
frequency to meet demand (for example, some courses are offered only once a year). Another administrator believes that the classes
are being scheduled in classroom space that is simply too small for demand and should be offered in larger classrooms. These two
administrators conducted an initial analysis that demonstrated an increasing trend in the average number of semesters until graduation.
However, at the same time, there has been growth in programs that are attracting an increasing number of part-time working
professional students.
Before money and resources are expended to create, distribute and analyze survey data, it is believed that some initial analysis may be
conducted on already existing data sources. These data sources include:
Student admissions data: Contains by admit term each newly admitted students major area of study, intent to enroll part-time or fulltime,
if they are offered an assistantship, if they are an international student, and expected graduation term
Student record data: Contains each students’ academic history, including semesters enrolled, major area of study, student status
(Graduate assistant or International student, Full-time or Part-time), and graduation term
Student class data: Contains for each student the classes enrolled including if the class was passed, failed or withdrawn from
Master schedule data: Contains a list of all scheduled classes, times, number of students enrolled, and their capacity limits
All four of these data sets are available for every historical semester and can be linked together. Student record data and student
class data can be merged by student id. Student class data and master schedule data can be merged by course id.
It is noteworthy that some students are required to be registered full-time, such as international students or those with graduate
assistantship positions who have a tuition waiver.
