Database concepts

Hi,
I am new to database and i am having confusion in database concepts. We say that the data in a RDBMS is stored in tables. Is it actually stored in tables or is it just how we perceive the data to be stored?
Can u suggest some good funadamental books for concepts?

Thanks in advance.
