If you want to practice then I would suggest you chose to model something familiar to you. The tricky part of modelling IMHO is catching all the little quirks of the subject, and to do this you need something real that you know. This could be as simple as making a database for your CDs (this innocuous sounding project can get more complex than it sounds) to modelling part of your employer's business. Alternatively, you might know someone running a small business that would like a database to help them out.
