difference between ERD and Data Modelling

Hi All,
I am quite new to this area of technology. Recently I am given an assignment of designing a database for an application.

I thought initially that:
1) I need to identify the data points that needs to be captured
2) Structure it in the form of table
3) Draw the relationship of each table - (ERD)

and thats it.

But when i searched on the internet, I saw lots of information and activities pertaining to a database design.

Can anyone brief the steps involved in a database design? Also some URLs, references to a newbie like me will be helpful.

Thanks in advance.
qA

Start with the logical design, modeling the business. Identify entities and their relationships. Then add attributes to the entities. From there, you move to a physical database design where you may combine or split entities for performance or data integrity reasons.
Model the business, not the application.
