Modeling a Polytree

Hi there guys and welcome to my first post :-),

right now I am trying to model a real toughie. I identified the data structure I currently work on as an Polytree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Have you ever heard of it or even better tried to model it in an SQL database? I am a bit desperate about it right now, and any help with it is very appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Bergtroll

P.S. If it turns out, that SQL can not handle this kind of model, do you have any hints which NoSQL database to look first?
