Question Special characters affect performance

Does anyone know if it affects SQL, JDBC or ODP's if you save special characters (carriage returns) inside an alpha field in a db2 table? The users are allowed to enter text and we allow them to enter carriage returns, and we save these in the database. My manager wants us to remove these special characters because management thinks it somehow affects performance. I can't find any information on the internet that these characters would have anything to do with performance.
