Mulit Byte To Single Byte Conversion

HI,
Can anyone tell me how is a multi_byte to single byte and vice versa conversion done in DB2.
It would be great even if someone can tell me how Oracle does it?
In ORACLE we have a function called to_single_byte which converts a given multi byte char to a single byte char( without changing its meaning). Can someone help me with how it can be done in DB2?
