I have DB2 UDB V8.1.3 WSE for Windows.
My questions about upgrading are:

a) Is there a DB2 Web Site where I can download the upgrade to V8.2?
b) Which is latest fixpack for V8.2?
c) If I have the license for WSE V8.1.X, do I need to buy an upgrade
license for V8.2?

You can upgrade from version 8.1 to 8.2 for free. This will change when 9.1 is ever released.

Fixpak 7 (replaced by 7a) is the first release of 8.2. The latest fixpak for 8.2 is FP8. The last fixpak for 8.1 is FP 6b. Some fixpaks can be installed without the GA code, and others require a previous install, depending on the OS (check the IBM downlaod site).

Looks like the IBM site was updated since the Useful DB2 Stuff thread was created. Try this site for fixpaks:

There are only two "releases" of Version 8.2:

- FP7a
- FP8 (just released in the last few days)

I would assume FP8 is more stable. That is what I would go with.

Yes, 6b on v8 fixpak 5

FP 6b is still version 8.1. FP 7 or above is version 8.2. I hope that makes sense.

The reason for this related the licensing. Any license holder of 8.1 is entitled to a free upgrade to 8.2. That is why 8.2 is issued as a fixpak to 8.1.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. I've yet to have every install be exactly the same. There seems to always be some little gotcha. The more you go thru the migration, the more likely you'll be at catching all these and be prepared with solutions or workarounds. I found putting together an upgrade plan document to be quite helpful so you don't overlook something that may cause an hours worth of work to turn into 24 hour recovery - it makes the auditors happy too!
