Question DB2 Client Upgrade

We need to upgrade DB2 client v7.1 to v8.2 FP2 on Solaris.

We tried to install v8 client first thru GUI from EXCEED but was prompted to enter new instance. Our goal is to upgrade existing instance, not to create new one on the client.

Would someone please help me out with the steps of upgrading v7.1 client to v8.2 FP2 without creating an instance? When I contacted IBM support, they recommended to drop and recreate existing instance. Is it really necessary? Is it feasible to upgrade existing instance without dropping it? Any recommedations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

since in V8 the client communication protocoll changed I'd also rather drop and recreate then running through update process. An update exists for server instances, not sure about clients.

Anyway, save your catalog using a catalog export and import it with V8 - easy and you are done (db2cfexp/db2cfimp)
