Physical file vs SQL Table

Can anybody point me to some documentation that explains in detail what is the difference (on an AS400 / iSeries system) between a physical file (created through DDS) and a table (created through SQL).
I have read this post: Difference between a 'file' and a 'table' and the definitions here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iserie...tm#HDRXDBTERMS
and I understand they are both a physical file but I take it there is more to it than just that. I would like to get in-depth information on this matter.
Thanks

One way to look at is that IBM just put a SQL front end on their native iSeries (AS/400) file system, as you can access them natively or via SQL. This is fundamentally different than other DB2 products (DB2 LUW, DB2 z/OS, etc.) which were built from the ground up as relational databases.
