Connecting to DB2 on Z/os

Hi all,
I am familiar with db2 UDB but do not have experience with mainframe systems.
Can I use DB2 Client to connect to db2 on a mainframe system from my Windows XP laptop or do I have to use DB2 connect? If I have to use DB2 connect, is there a free version?

I appreciate any help in pointing me in the right direction.

-Thanks all.
Sam.

Actually, with V8 or V9 on the mainframe you can connect without DB2 Connect, but you still need to have license for DB2 connect.

you need the java class file from db2 connect type 4 connection
but this does not allow you to use command line as no db2 client is installed
or db2 connect should be installed on gateway - with license..
