Applying a Fixpack - Do we need migration of DB

Hi Guys,

DB2 V9.1.3 on Win 2k3 Server

I need to apply Fixpack 9.5 FP 3b on existing 9.1. FP3

Will the database need MIGRATION ??

Last time I upgraded same size DB from 8.2 to 9.5 FP 3b, it took 40 mins to migrate DB (216GB).

Will it be same or much less b/c major ver is 9.

Thanks in advance. Not enough time to test. An emergency situation.

The migration will only take a minute or less from 9.5.3 to 9.5.3b (it will not actually change anything and is not necessary).

From 8.2 to 9.5 I beleive that DB2 had to change the page layouts of the data and indexes.

And how do you know that it will solve your problem if you do not test it first?

Or you are following the principal that by trowing enough sh%t at the wall, some will stick and fills the whole?

Sorry, maybe I am just a bit more old fashioned and like to check things first myself.

No problem,
This is good that you are saying -- A goo quality.

IBM was responsible for crashes that we were havin for last 15 days.
PMR !

They have hot fix for same problem but for ver 9.5 fp 3b
HotFix can be run after Fixpack upgrade.

So the told this morning 3:30 am that this is the fastest way.
since then I am trying to get a time window for testing on mirror. Did not get approval yet. Still I dare to do that.

Marcus_A has relieved me confirming that migration does not take much time. Still this will be tested tonight at 12:00am if i do not get window during day.

Thanks for your concern, please note that I did not have this much time to write even this much. Thanks to pepople who underrstand

There is really no need to migrate database if going from 3 to 3a.

I think the author of the original post goes from 9.1.3 to 9.5.3, so I suspect some migration might be involved. However, if I were him I would be addressing this question to IBM support instead of asking a bunch of strangers on some web forum...

My mistake. I thought it was 9.5 for both. The fixpack instructions indicate whether the database migration program needs to be run depending on the release of the current instance. For some release upgrades the migration program changes the data and index page layouts, but usually it just adds some optional administrative stored procedures, views, etc.

I would trust the doc more than a IBM support person on the phone.

I feel your pain, but at the severity level where DBFinder apparently is, often the opposite is true...

My personal opinion is that I would also listen to the support guys, then check the manuals, then do at least some smoke screen testing (even better yet run some real test scenarios), before finally going into production - with anything. And since you had problems for 15 days already, the question is if you could live with the problems for a couple more days. If the fix doesn't work, I haven't lost anything. If it does work, you have some confidence that it doesn't break a whole lot else. It gives you some piece of mind; even if you consider that the IBM support folks do know very well what they are doing - at least L2/L3 support.

If you ask an IBM support person, they will look at the fixpack install instructions. I would rather read it for myself.

I have received several wrong answers from IBM support in the past, although I admit that I tend to only ask the tough questions.

Finally

There was migration involved. this was not long (12 mins for 216GB db).
Don't worry guys I asked IBM guys, the answer came after real migration.
I was really in tough situation. However my team did not stress me. They were working together.
Everybody was fetching info as possible, Manager, CIO , and even Developers were asking db2 ques from their friends and other contacts.
