Hello everyone,

My manager has told me to write a shell script to (Aix 5.3 Db2 9.1.0) :

Verify All Services are UP and Running.

I want to double check if I am missing something.

Services that I will check will be :

db2sysc
db2fenc
db2wdog
db2tcpcm
. . . .

Can someone help me complete the list ; I am feeling short of items.

Actually my manager is not from DB2, so he cannot suggest list of processes to be watched.

What's the purpose of this "monitoring"?

I have seen that long list, but I think that I need to write for minimum # of processes that will be active in each and every instance.

Purpose of monitoring is to ensure that database is running smooth, and to be alerted as soon as any service goes down.


As far as I know there is a monitoring tool and the team ( dba team ) is checking connectivity only. No other parameters are monitored.

Manager is thinking of enhancing database part of monitoring. So he wants me to come up with a list of processes that should be checked before we can say DB2 is running fine.


This is only for confirming availability.

Aside from db2sysc, I don't think it is useful to check all those processes. If you want to verify that the database is functioning OK, then write a script on another server that accesses the database remotely and runs a simple SQL statement that you can verify the output of. This is much more comprehensive than just verifying all the processes are running. You should also verify that the status for all tablespaces and tables are OK.

Does this mean that connect and run a simple query, is enough ?

You can also use db2pd to check if the instance is up (and how long it's been up). For example:
db2pd -age | grep -i partition
