backup compression

I'm considering to use automatic backup/log pruning (auto_del_rec_obj and related parameters...).

Currently, backup is done to disk (without compression) and then gzip'd. I think db2 won't find a backup image with .gz during automatic pruning ( does anyone know for sure? ). So, I'm also considering to use db2 backup compression instead of gzip but need to know if this change will require extra storage. I can't make any changes at this time so unable to test 'compress' vs. 'no compress + gzip'.

From your experience, which method offers best storage savings:

- backup with compress option
- backup without compress option and then gzip it

Data is not stored compressed in the db (no value/row compression).

I have done some tests in the past and always found unix utilities (gzip,bzip2) give better compression than the backup compress option.

I also prefer storing the last 1 or 2 backups uncompressed so that they are readily available in case of restore.

Yes. gzip file will NOT be recognized as a valid backup image.
