Backup time

UDB ver 8.1.3 on SP2/AIX.

We are planning to have backup strategy for our database server.
The database is currently 200 GB. How much time does it generally take to ONLINE backup the database on disk / tape?

Also will offline backup be faster than online?

Thanks,

Re: Backup time

There is no way to tell the exact time as there are lot of variables involved but the online backup of our database (size 280 GB) takes around 8 hours.

Backup Strategy

Hi,

Whether to go for an Online Backup or Offline Backup entirely depends on your environment and the policies of your IT department.

Each of the method's has its own pro's and cons, what I suggest is that you first list down your requirements and then decide on what you need.

We are currently proceeding with an Online Backup as the data is essentially critical to us and the copies of the logs are also mirrored to external disks for additional safety.

Re: Backup Strategy

I feel it is more than the policies of your IT department ...

The bakckup, recovery, DR and HA policies should all be dependent on the requirements of the core business the IT Infrastructure supports ... For eg. if you have an on-line store with customers worldwide, you do not want to bring down the system and hence you should do an online backup ... If your database is used for a 9-5 shop, yes , you may find a couple of hours to get into the offline mode ....

You can have a look at the backup buffer size, numbuffers etc in your backup command to improve performance ... Your utliheapsz config parm also needs consdieration ... AFAIK, Using a tape, is a killer ... You may consider writing to disk and then backing up to tap
