Cryptic Error Messages!

I've begun receiving an error that I can't seem to figure out. It seems to start after the server has been up for a few hours. After it begins, it doesn;t occur with every request, but gradually grows in frequency. It doesn't seem to be related to server load (I've used a stress test tool to attempt to recreate the error with no luck).

I really appreciate any help.

Error Message:

Communication function detecting the error: "gethostbyname". Protocol specific error code(s): "*", "2", "*". SQLSTATE=08001
