DAO problem with Paradox

Please help me! I have to repair old code using DAO with Paradox 4.x driver assumed against tables generated in Paradox 7.
The problem:
When I open a recordset it always gives me that number of records is 1 and number of fields is 1, even when it's not. I have Paradox 8 installed and the tables when opened look properly formed.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
