On Creation vs. On Commit

Hi

I am a bit confused about the "On Creation" and "On Commit" option in FMP 7. This option is available when you Use AutoEnter Serial Number for a Field value.

My question is if On Commit is selected, do we need a button to commit a record, if not how does it know when to commit the record....
