Authenticating users for public interface in FM7

I'm trying to figure out how to set up users with passwords and have them sign in to gain access to their own data using FM7. I've looked at the integrated authentication, but am told that it is only for admins, and not meant to be a global authentication system. Is this true? How can I set up a simple evaluation against username and password fields in a database? I've not been able to figure out how to even insert an entry field in the login layout which uses the data to evaluate against!

Thanks in advance!
