How to start with Informix?

Hello,

I installed succesfully IDS and Client SDK on a Linux machine. I don't have any experience as Informix DBA. Now, how can I start the Database and create a new Instance? There is a Tool to Administer IDS? Can I use a Tool to Administer IDS from a Windows machine?

Best Regards

Alfredo

you have to create the instance and with in the instance create the database.
Make sure you set up
INFORMIXDIR INFORMIXSERVER ONCONFIG and PATH env variables
Set up you sqlhosts and services file.

You can go thru "onmonitor" to configure the instance.

Shared memory

Hello,

slowly I come along. As you recomend me, I used onmonitor to configure the instance but everytime comes the error message:

shared memory not initialized for .....

How can I initialize the shared memory? Please, if you can, give me a detailed description for this task.

Best Regards

Alfredo

try bringing the instance up using oninit -v that will show you where informix in encountering a problem.
also take a look in online.log for the error messages.

If that does not point you in the right direction send me your onconfig and sqlhosts files

Hello,

many thanks for your help !!!

when I want to use some tools (like dbaccess) I get the message:

shared memory not initialized for INFORMIXSERVER 'xxx'

After the installation from Informix is required to do a disk-space initialization, create chunks other anything else? Please detail me all this steps.

In the attached slqhost file I have put in a database entry a service. It is required to do something whith this service (creating, starting, etc) or is just required to insert an entry in the file /etc/services?

Best Regards

Alfredo
