Take a loon in the $INFORMIXDIR/etc
for the file $TBCONFIG in that file take a look at the entry MSGPATH
that is where you log file is.
Informix does a checkpoint every x seconds, when it finishes it writes an entry in the log file. As far as the manuals "Good Luck" I have not seen any around in a while.

to start a logical log backup execute tbtape -c that will start a continuous logical log backup

any command that starts with tb in the $INFORMIXDIR/bin directory you can do tbcommand -- and that will show you the options for the command.
