we are tyring to set up a IDS Database 10.0 Server under SuSe 10.0 on a HP ML350 with dual 3,2Ghz Xeon with 2GB RAM.

Following parameters are set:

SHMBASE 0x10000000L 4 Shared memory base address
# The following parameters are related to the buffer pool
BUFFERPOOL default,buffers=512000,lrus=16,lru_min_dirty=45,lr u_max_dirty=54
BUFFERPOOL size=2k,buffers=512000,lrus=16,lru_min_dirty=45,lr u_max_dirty=54
VPCLASS aio,num=32

onstat give us:
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 10.00.UC3R1E -- On-Line -- Up 00:10:08 -- 1250820 Kbytes

but we are trying to increase the maximum memory for the IDS instance.
If we set BUFFERPOOL over buffers=700000 the Database-Server crashes on initializing

I'm not familiar with IDS 10 but please indicate what you have in you onconfig for SHMVIRTSIZE, perhaps its needs to be bigger.

I'm using an older IDS 9.3 release running on 32-bit AIX which limits my usage of memory to approx 2GB but I have 250K buffers (4K buffer size) & an initial SHMVERTSIZE of 700K. Your 64 bit system may require some OS tweaking as well as adjusting some IDS config parameters.

It's a balancing act and you have to determine what works best at your site .... max # of buffers or large resident shared memory segment.

Allocating too much to the resident portion is a waste of resources but you run the risk of the engine allocating additional shared memory segments (SHMADD) as indicated by onstat -g seg output. There should be one "V" segment for best performance.
