It all depends what you want to do.
Do you want to use a storage manager?
Backup over network?
Backup to a tape or directory? How many tape-drives?
Do you want it to run in the crontab?
Do you want your logical logs to be backed up manually/automatically

Check the following link:
http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/i...ry/ids_92.html

Lots of answers can be found there..

Informix Backup and Restore Guide. (onbar with ISM)
Administration Guide
Informix Storage Manager Guide (ISM)

For ontape you just have to set the correct TAPEDEV and LTAPEDEV in your $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG file.
Beware that ontape is user-interactive.
use it with
ontape -s
ontape -r

What??
That's new...

The only limit ontape has is teh size of the backup device.
If it's full, it will ask you to insert a new one.
The size is set using the TAPESIZE parameters in the ONCONFIG file.
